Close your eyes and think back to the last time you scrolled through your favorite social media app. Whether it be Instagram or TikTok, put yourself back in that moment. Are you there? Great!

Now think about the feelings you had when you saw the content on your timeline or FYP.

Did you feel:

  • Shame
  • Embarrassment
  • A desire to change your body
  • A need to change your eating patterns

If any of those feelings came up for you, it might be time to re-evaluate who you are following on your social media.

The impact of social media on body image

Studies have shown a link between image-based social media and body image and eating concerns over the last decade. So the next time you're on Instagram or TikTok and someone comes up on your feed that makes you feel one of those feelings, we give you unconditional permission to hit the mute or unfollow button. It's good for your mental health.

Instagram and TikTok are also full of some really great body positive influencers, and we've curated a list of our favorite follows for you to reference.

Body-positive accounts to follow on social media

If you are looking for self-love with a side of realistic relationship content: Alicia McCarvell

Why we love Alicia: Alicia is the poster child for knowing that you are inherently worthy. Her content reminds us how important it is to love ourselves, even though the journey to find that elusive self-love is a hard one. She posts the good and the bad of her work on self-acceptance and talks openly about her own body image issues. Not to mention her relationship content is extremely cute.

If you are looking for fashion advice: Brandeis (Brandi) Nicole

Why we love Brandi: Brandi is a style coach who helps women discover their body shape (and FYI plus size is not a shape). She believes that your body in its current form is worthy and deserving of looking good and styling in clothes. Her Instagram provides great style tips, trend analysis, and outfit inspiration.

If you like fitness and / or struggle with fertility: Meg Boggs

Why we love Meg: Meg is a great follow if you "workout to fight bears in the forest" (in her own words) not to make the number on the scale go down. Her feed is full of content that inspires us to workout from a place of self-care and lift heavier weights to get stronger, not shrink ourselves. Recently, Meg inspired us even more by opening up about her journey with infertility, experience with IVF, and now currently with pregnancy.

If you like seeing intuitive eating in practice: Victoria Garrick

Why we love Victoria: Do you ever feel like intuitive eating is a concept you understand but can't comprehend in practice? Well Victoria does a great job of explaining what it is like to listen to your hunger cues. In both serious and comedic videos, she walks you step-by-step through her process of listening to a hunger cue, picking out a meal, enjoying that meal, and being satisfied by what she ate. Victoria does a great job of making intuitive eating real and accessible to her audience.

If you're ready to deepen the connection between your mind and body: Claire Siegel

Why we love Claire: Claire maybe the Founder & CEO of Flourish but she's also a registered dietitian who loves to share with her audience all about how the connection between out minds and bodies contribute to our overall health. She provides her audience with education on gentle nutrition and body image while pulling from experience in her own life on how she manages her health as a busy CEO. From overnight oats recipes to beautiful Notion templates, Claire shares the way she builds sustainable health habits in her own life on her Instagram and TikTok.
